The program is a joint initiative of Alzheimer's Australia SA and South Australia Police. The program helps find and return to their homes people suffering from Alzheimer's disease, other dementias, autism, intellectual disabilities and various other physical and mental conditions who may have wandered and become confused and lost. Any person who is likely to become confused and lost should register or be registered with Alzheimer's Australia SA. You can get the application form from Alzheimer's Australia SA. Write to them at: Alzheimer's Australia SA 27 Coyngham Street Glenside SA 5065 or phone (08) 8372 210 or call the dementia help line on toll free 1800 100 500. The person will be given a bracelet which should be worn at all times. The bracelet has a personalised number and the South Australia Police emergency number engraved on the back. This personalised number is held on the South Australia Police database and is accessible by police 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The database contains confidential details on the person with dementia or other condition, including a physical description, information on previous places of residence and other locations the person may visit, and contact details for up to three carers. If you find a person who is confused and lost, check to see if they are wearing a bracelet. If so, call the police number on the back of the bracelet and tell them the personalised number. Police will arrange for the person to be safely returned to their home. Carers can also start a search for a person who is missing. As soon as you realise that a person has wandered, call the police and quote the number for that person. Police personnel will suggest areas to search near to home using information from the confidential database. You can download a copy of a leaflet about Safe Return PDF (186KB) or you can get a copy from the Community Programs Section at your local police station.
