South Australia Police offers 'careers within a career' with over 40 specialist sections open to officers with appropriate qualifications and aptitude, including: - Criminal investigation
- Special Task and Rescue (including Negotiator, Explosive, Mounted, Water and Dog Operations Units)

Following graduation, police officers may continue study towards qualifications for promotion, embark on in service training courses and gain experience in general duties policing in preparation for their choice of career. SAPOL has provisions to access study leave for approved courses. Initial training at the Police Academy is linked to external tertiary qualifications and police will soon be able to work towards a degree while performing their job. People can also apply their existing university qualifications as SAPOL has a focus on management and leadership skills, both in the operational policing environment and contemporary management practices. - Advanced Diploma of Public Safety (Police Investigations) - a nationally accredited qualification
